Mark Yelland Small Mouth Yellowfish on dry fly

Mark Yelland’s Vaal River Report

As I pen this report the rain is steadily falling with a lot more predicted, the river has fished exceptionally well since early September, with fly fishers making some exceptional catches with fish up 4.6kg’s ( 10.12 pounds ) being caught mainly on nymphs, however some good small mouth were also caught on dry flies. I attended the Elgro Yellow Fish Festival (Hosted by Elgro Lodge just outside Potchefstroom under the auspices of the Windknot Fly Fishing Club ) and held at Elgro Lodge just outside Potchefstroom, over the week end of the 16 – 19th of October where most of the fish mentioned were caught and the odd Large Mouth was also hooked and landed. Interestingly a Large Mouth was also caught not for the first time was also caught while nymphing in knee to waist deep water, it is my observation and theory that Largemouth also spawn in relatively shallow water but are rarely observed like the Small Mouth.
My hope is that the rain will give the river a much needed flush without causing it to flood as happened in November last year, which rendered the river unfishable until early April. Please contact me should you require any guiding on the Vaal, my clients have had great results when fishing dries to sighted fish in the 1.5 to 3.5kg category.

All the Best
